July 24 - Leadership: Achieving clarity in your comprehensive school safety plan.

This session will help team leaders (regardless of where they are in the org chart) learn where to start, how to assemble their team, how to navigate system complexity, and concludes with the PASS “Plan | Prepare | Practice” model for getting everyone involved and on the same page.

R. Leslie “Les” Nichols, MSSA, CPP, CSC

Les Nichols has been active the field of child protection involving youth-serving organizations for over 30 years. He is the former National Vice President of Child Safety for Boys & Girls Clubs of America (National Headquarters). In this role he developed the core child protection resources and strategies still used today by one of the nation’s largest and most respected youth-serving organizations, serving nearly 4 million school-age children at 5,000 sites, many located within K-12 schools. In 2016 Mr. He entered private practice as a school safety and security consultant and also serves as an expert witness in child injury cases involving organizations.

Les has authored, co-authored or contributed to over 40 publications addressing protection within organizations including: Extreme Violence: Understanding & Protecting People from Active Assailants, Hate Crimes & Terrorist Attacks; Recommended Guidelines and Practices: Background Screening in Youth Serving Organizations, 3rd Ed; Maryland Guidelines and Best Practices for the Design, Assessment and Modification of Physical Facilities and Spaces to Reduce Opportunities for Child Sexual Abuse; Staff Screening Toolkit, 3rd Ed; and Preventing Child Sexual Abuse within Youth-Serving Organizations: Getting Started with Policies and Procedures.

Les is a member of the PASS Technical Committee and the PASS Emerging Technology Roundtable, as well as serving on committees with various other youth-serving organizations. He is board-certified protection professional by ASIS International and the International Association of Professional Security Professionals, and a member of the International CPTED Association. He has a Master of Science in Security Administration from Southwestern College and a Bachelor of Architecture from The University of Texas.

July 31 - Surveillance: The future of cameras in classrooms.

Category – Surveillance.

Covering one of the more controversial topics in school safety and security, this session explores uses of cameras for activation of an alarm, or escalation of an audio analytics reporting solution. How pixelation under normal conditions protects privacy, and how event-based activation provides safety. PASS subject matter experts will discuss how they see the future of this technology, and how advanced solutions will create a safer classroom environment.

With over 25 years of experience at Axis Communications, I oversee industry relations for North American operations, including ASIS International and the Security Industry Association (SIA). I am a Community Vice President for three ASIS communities: Crisis Management and Business Continuity, Emerging Technology, and Critical Infrastructure. I also serve as the Chair of the Video and Vision Subcommittee at SIA, which focuses on standards activities for video surveillance. I was recently appointed Chair of The Monitoring Association’s Government Relations Committee. As a member of the International Association for Privacy Professionals (IAPP), I am pursuing their AI Governance certification.

Driven by a fervent commitment to advancing the security industry, I have actively contributed to numerous educational and speaking engagements at prestigious events such as GSX, ISC West, ISC East, and The Monitoring Association. My involvement with the SIA Education Committee led me to teach a physical security technology course as an adjunct professor at Mercer Community College in New Jersey.

I joined Axis in 1997 as a business development manager for the North American Application Developer Partner program. In this role, I was responsible for finding best-of-breed software developers to create applications for Axis’ network video products. I also oversaw business development growth in the K-12 and higher education market segments. Additionally, I managed the educational services department until 2013 and helped develop the Axis Academy educational program, which still exists today.

Brian Gard

Brian Gard currently serves as the Director of Safety for National Heritage Academies (NHA). In this role, he leads safety initiatives for over 100 K-12 schools in 9 states.

He also serves on the School Safety Commission in Michigan, the North Carolina School Safety Advisory Council and Physical Safety Workgroup in Colorado. He was previously a runner up for Director of the Year award from Campus Safety Magazine.

Prior to his career at NHA, he served as a police officer for over a decade in multiple areas ranging from the tactical team to the training bureau.
